Fortnite B.R.U.T.E. mechs will instantly self-destruct as soon as they land in the game, due to a new chapter in its The Visitor storyline (via Eurogamer).
There are widespread reports that the mechs are exploding upon landing in-game currently, with leaked images suggesting they have succumbed to a virus.
Epic Games has not acknowledged the explosions as a bug, meaning they are likely unusable at the moment on purpose. pic.twitter.com/d1PFQi0Hts

A great number of Fortnite players hate the mechs as they are considered to significantly skew the game experience. Once two players have hopped in a B.R.U.T.E., the duo are armed and highly dangerous, picking off the other combatants with the mech’s speed, abilities, and heavy weapons. Epic Games responded to the urging that the mechs should be removed by publishing its own data that showed ‘players who had previously struggled with getting eliminations acquiring more [while in the mech], while the number of eliminations earned by more experienced players remained steady.’
‘We regularly have and will continue to release content that shakes up gameplay in Fortnite in unexpected ways,’ Epic Games added. And now, the mechs are totally worthless. They’ll explode as soon as they touch the earth, and although some are celebrating the B.R.U.T.E.s redundancy, others suspect that mechanical meddling is to blame.
Mech and warnings from it having a virus on the 3 sections of it. The Visitor is a time-travelling mysterious stranger that is trying to fix the island’s temporal troubles with their futuristic gizmos. The Visitor was shown to be dismantling mechs in an official promotional image for Season X, but their intentions were unknown. Monitors in The Visitor’s hideout at Dusty Depot show that a virus has been uploaded to the mechs, and what the Visitor has in store for them will become clear as the season reaches its conclusion.
One theory is that players will bid a fond farewell to the island, as a leaked loading screen for Season X’s final week shows characters waving to a battle bus sailing off into the sunset. Not only that, but datamined files have uncovered a list of never-before-seen locations like ‘LazyLake’, ‘CampCod’, and ‘WeepingWoods’.

For now, we will have to twiddle our thumbs and wait to see what shape The Visitor’s grand plan takes. There are two new Rift Zones to keep players busy, though. One is Gotham City where players will become the dark knight, and the other is Starry Suburbs which offers incredible loot from falling meteors.
