You may be wondering what’s the difference between the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra vs S22 Ultra and you’d certainly not be alone.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra, Samsung’s latest flagship, was released on February 17th and has been met with considerable buzz. Though it shares a number of similarities with its predecessor, the S23 Ultra stands out with a number of key differences that are worth getting excited about.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra was released only last year and has since had a great reputation for its camera quality and battery life. Now that the S23 Ultra has been released, the S22 Ultra’s popularity has only climbed. This is in part thanks to a recent price drop in response to Samsung’s latest generation of smartphones.

You may be weighing up which phone to go for, and how it matches up to what your main usage will be – whether that be for everyday browsing, watching content, or even gaming. It might also be worth checking our chosen alternatives to the S23 if you’d like to upgrade without going for the most expensive option.

So, we’re going to make things a little easier by comparing what we think are the key comparison areas between the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and S22 Ultra. We’ll look at everything from specs to features, and even design and value for money so you can make an informed choice.

As you can see from the table, there are a number of key similarities between the S22 Ultra and S23 Ultra. Both share a refresh rate of 120Hz, and have the same stunning AMOLED display. Most notably, both feature a 5000mAh powered battery that seriously stands out in the premium phone market.

The are some major differences though. Firstly, the S23 Ultra has the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. This contributes to an overall higher performance increase of 25% and is up to 10% more energy efficient than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

The second important difference is the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s shiny new camera specs. With a main camera, an ultra-wide camera and two zoom cameras on the back, the S23 Ultra has secured its position as one of the most versatile smartphone cameras in 2023. After three generations of the 108MP main camera, Samsung has made a huge upgrade with an impressive 200MP main camera. This translates to cleaner shots in low light and finer detail. The S23 Ultra also supports 8K video recording at 30fps, upgraded from the 8K 24fps delivered by the S22 Ultra.

On the whole, when it comes to specs there are a few substantial differences, the most eye-catching being the S23’s new camera upgrades.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra vs S22 Ultra – battery life

Battery life is an important consideration, especially if you’re out a lot, or else like to use your phone for taking photos which tends to sap a lot of battery.

The S23 Ultra and S22 Ultra have the same battery power of 5000mAh. Though both score higher than the Galaxy S23 and S22 respectively, we’re surprised to see that Samsung’s flagship hasn’t trumped the S22 Ultra.

Even if we’re a little disappointed that the S23 Ultra and S22 Ultra both have the same battery life, 5000mAh is pretty high, on par with the Nubia Red Magic 8 Pro and OnePlus 10 Pro.

It’s also worth adding that using the Galaxy’s camera a lot has been known to run down the battery. Though the S23 Ultra shares the same battery as the S22 Ultra, the fact that its new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip is up to 10% more energy efficient than its predecessor might just give the S23 Ultra the edge.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra vs S22 Ultra – design

While we didn’t see any dramatic changes in design between the S23 and S22, and it’s pretty much the same story for S23 Ultra vs S22 Ultra.

Samsung has gone for a slightly reworked design that has a more angular profile for the S23 Ultra. However, both are the same 6.8 inch size and glass front finish. The main difference you’ll notice on the back is the lens sizes. Predictably, the S23 Ultra features slightly larger lenses.

Both designs also feature the same IP68 water and dust protection rating, meaning they can survive submerging in up to 1 meter of fresh water for up to 30 minutes.

Finally, both the S23 Ultra and S22 Ultra come with an S Pen which some will find useful got sketching or writing notes.

Overall, both phones feature attractive designs, with the major differences between these phones found on the inside!

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra vs S22 Ultra – value for money

Samsung has, impressively, managed to keep the price of the S23 Ultra at $1,199. While this might sound like a lot, it’s the exact same price the S22 Ultra was released for a year ago. Since then global prices have raised massively, not to mention all the superior features the S23 Ultra boasts.

The good news for the S22 Ultra is that, generally, a new release brings discounts to older models, so if you’re slightly strapped for cash, the S22 Ultra makes for a more budget-friendly choice. Though the S23 Ultra is a fantastically powerful phone that is full of potential, the S22 Ultra continues to remain popular a year after its release. We don’t think the arrival of the S23 Ultra is going to change that.

Which should you go for?

As usual, choosing between two flagships is a balancing act between price and performance.

There’s no denying that the S23 Ultra’s camera is something to get excited about. If you’re a fan of photography or else enjoy capturing memories, then the S23 Ultra is probably worth it thanks to its 200 mega-pixel main sensors.

However, the S22 still seriously delivers in the photography department, and the fact that it has the same 5000mAh battery as the S23 Ultra also makes a strong case to opt for the older model.

Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference, and how much you’re willing to spend on your new phone.
