A remake of Silent Hill 2 could be in development at Bloober Team, the studio behind The Medium and Layers of Fear.
This latest rumour sprang from Nate the Hate, and Jeff Grub then corroborated it. The crux is that a remake of Silent Hill 2 is on the way, and that it will a timed exclusive for PlayStation 5. (This would be spiritually fitting, as the original was an exclusive on PlayStation 2. According to Nate the Hate, this remake will feature “reworked puzzles” and “new endings.”
“This is the stuff I’ve heard, and it comes from multiple different sources. Not all of my sources are primary, but everything is mostly lining up. To me, the biggest indicator is the stuff I’ve seen lines up with Konami doing a big reveal at E3 last year before it pulled out.”
Another part of the rumour mill is that there are multiple Silent Hill projects happening, and we have heard that a few times now. There are also rumours around Hideo Kojima and his possible involvement with a new Silent Hill project.
Perhaps the bottom line, though, is this: it doesn’t really matter. It is incredibly unlikely that any studio will be able to capture what made Silent Hill 2 so singular. It was a game made my misfits, who had all failed at other projects at Konami. No western studio has ever come close to matching Team Silent’s efforts with the four mainline Silent Hill games.
If you love Silent Hill 2, then play it again. A good—patched—HD version is available through PlayStation Now. In terms of being excited for Silent Hill, Kojima’s involvement would be the most exciting, after how good P.T. was. Or transfer your excitement onto Bokeh Games, which is where some of Team Silent ended up. They are now working on Slitterhead, which looks bonkers—in a good way.
