Nintendo has announced that it is to acquire Canadian developer Next Level Games, making the studio who were behind 2019's Luigi's Mansion 3 a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company.
The deal— announced by the company earlier today—is expected to go through by March 1, 2021 pending shareholder approval with Nintendo saying the deal would "secure the availability of Next Level Games development resources for Nintendo, including development expertise, as well as facilitate an anticipated improvement in development speed and quality by enabling closer communication and exchange of staff with the Nintendo development team."
Next Level Games was also the studio behind other Nintendo titles Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon for the Nintendo DS and Super Mario Strikers and its sequel Mario Strikers: Charged for the Gamecube and Wii, so given the long history between the two companies the deal certainly makes sense. No details were given about the monetary value of the move and there's no word on what the developer will be working on next, but given how much we enjoyed Luigi's Mansion 3 we're definitely looking forward to finding out.
