In the wake of NetherRealm revealing more characters and Kameos coming to Mortal Kombat 1, there’s been much celebrating in the MK community about the return of Smoke, particularly after fans got a glimpse of his finisher.

The Mortal Kombat subreddit is currently filled with threads hyped about the return of Smoke – the grey-clad ninja who may not often enjoy the front-and-center billing of his Lin Kuei clanmates Sub Zero and Scorpion, but clearly has a significant fan base of his own. “Smoke is Konfirmed!” exclaims the aptly-numbered oHheLInAw420. “My all time favourite is back!” “Oh man, so happy my boy is back and looks better than ever,” agrees DarkConker13. “This trailer brought the hype to 11 for me.”

Some of the community are undecided on Smoke’s hair in his new guise, however. “Glad to see him again, though I do wish they kept the hair,” says PantsMcDancey, “I liked the long hair, and this crop feels so basic. Plus long hair is billowy and shit, like smoke. I thought it fit him great as one of the only ninjas that wears their hair down.” Conversely, in another thread admiring Smoke’s new design, SephironX says “I am so happy they didn’t keep the hair.” idiottech also responded with “People don’t realise how completely stupid it’d look in this realistic style.”

One thing the community are unified behind though, is Smoke’s new Fatality. The game’s latest trailer showcased his new finishing move, where Smoke slices off his opponent’s arms before forcibly shoving an explosive in their mouth, which rips off their jaw. “Probably my favourite yet,” declares ladedadedum25. “Excellent pace and timing.” Other commenters, such as IC2Flier, called the move “Grisly” and added “Also reminds me of Karambit Guy from The Raid 2.” And as is traditional for Mortal Kombat games, the move is already ripe for pun material for its name, as Pale_Succotash530 points out: “Watch it be called Jaw Drop”.

The move is certainly a worthy addition to the Mortal Kombat 1 Fatalities we’ve seen so far, and there’s sure to be plenty more in store as NetherRealm reveals more about the game in the run up to the Mortal Kombat 1 release date on September 19, 2023.
