Update: Since the publication of this article Xbox’s Website has been updated to show that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2023) will be coming to Xbox One alongside the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.
Original Story: With the full reveal of Modern Warfare 3 just around the corner, there’s big question marks around whether the game will be available on last gen platforms like Xbox One and PS4 as Modern Warfare 2 was.
The confusion arose when a number of Call of Duty fan Twitter accounts, including The Ghost of Hope, noted that the Xbox Store page for Modern Warfare 3 does mention the Xbox Series X|S, but does not list the Xbox One under the platforms label. This seems to imply that the game may be skipping the previous generation, and landing on Xbox Series X|S consoles only. However, other fans – such as TheGamingRevolution – have also pointed out that the recent Makarov trailer posted to the PlayStation official YouTube channel mentions ‘PS4’ specifically in the title which implies the game will at least be coming to last gen on Sony’s machine.
Is MW3 on Xbox One?
It has now been confirmed that yes, MW3 will be available on Xbox One when the Modern Warfare 3 release date arrives on November 10.
While it had already been confirmed that the game will be on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 (as well as PC) – it was, for a little while, uncertain if it’d come to previous gen consoles, as they were missing from the game’s Xbox store listing. However, a few days ahead of the Modern Warfare 3 reveal event start time the listing was updated following a number of users on social media questioning if this meant the last-gen console versions would be omitted from being able to pick up the new game.
Was MW2 on Xbox One?
Modern Warfare 2 did indeed release on Xbox One as well as PlayStation 4. While the game didn’t feature as high resolution graphics, or high-definition textures, the complete MW2 experience – singleplayer, multiplayer and all – was available largely the same as the current gen version.
While we don’t expect any major engine changes between MW2 and MW3, we’ll keep a close eye and update this page when we get official word on if Modern Warfare 3 is available on Xbox One.
