Hellmann’s will donate a meal to charity for every spoiled turnip dropped off on its Animal Crossing: New Horizons island.
#HellmannsIsland has come to #ACNH to help turn virtual food waste into real meals. For each spoiled turnip you drop off on our 5-star island, we’ll donate a meal to @SecondHarvestCA to feed people in need. DM us with #HellmannsIsland for your dodo code. Limited spots available. pic.twitter.com/QOWXDR5FCQ

The stalk market is big in Animal Crossing. On Sundays, players buy them cheap from Daisy Mae, and watch their turnip selling prices like a hawk. Just like in real life, the high point is often on a Thursday, but, the stalk market is fickle. Perhaps the player holds out for a better price on Friday, on Saturday, and lo! The turnips have gone rotten. Totally spoiled. Utterly useless.
I'm so glad I got to help some people in need just by dropping off some in-game spoiled turnips! The Guide was really nice and literally their island was way better than mine! #HellmannsIsland pic.twitter.com/6iRiiifkSZ

However, Hellmann’s Canada has announced that it will take these mouldy vegetables, and with each turnip, a real meal will be donated to the charity, Second Harvest. Every day this week from 3.00pm til 12.00pm EST, interested players should direct message the Hellmann’s Canada Twitter account for the island’s Dodo Code and set up a time and place to drop off their turnips. Furthermore, players are encouraged to explore Hellmann’s Island (five stars, mind), download exclusive Hellmann’s merch using the custom designs portal, and snap some photos in their photoshoot area.
It’s not known how many free meals have been donated thus far, but it’s a wonderful initiative, and it’s one more instance of the power of creativity in Animal Crossing. Gillette Venus collaborated with an Animal Crossing player to create skin conditions and disabilities designs in order to promote body positivity. And, when a player lost their Switch, local police sent an in-game letter to tell them their Switch was safe and sound at the station.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is out now for Nintendo Switch.
