The latest Fortnite update has gone live today, and besides the dinosaurs, jungle biome and Transformers – a new emote in the latest Battle Pass is a tribute to an iconic Spider-Man moment that isn’t even in any of the movies.
Launching today, the emote Get Out of Your Mind sees the character dancing while splashing in some water. It didn’t take long for the users of the Fortnite subreddit to deduce that the motion is actually based from Spider-Man actor Tom Holland’s iconic Lip Sync Battle performance to Rhianna smash hit Umbrella. Though there’s some subtle differences (no doubt to avoid further potential dance-related lawsuits), putting the dance side by side with the original leaves very little room for doubt of the emote’s inspiration.
Fans were ecstatic at the discovery on Reddit, with the thread “Worth the price of the battle pass alone” from Bonus_mosher receiving responses such as “Big W” and “The choreography is tight”. The main criticism is the understandable choice not to use the licensed Rhianna track. “I like how they added the water but adding the music would’ve made it cooler” says Spear_Speaks007. They also went on to say “I’m sure I’m not the only one who went to watch the full video after this, lol.”
If you’ve somehow managed to last this long without knowing the original video’s context, Holland was competing against Mary Jane actress and real-life partner Zendaya on the show, when he started by performing to classic Gene Kelly song Singin’ in the Rain in a business suit. However, he soon whips his suit off to reveal he’s wearing Rhianna’s French maid outfit – stockings and all – from the Umbrella video, before launching into an incredible dance routine that really, has to be seen to appreciate fully. The video sits at 35 million views on YouTube.
