Fans of Obsidian RPG Fallout New Vegas were given cause for hope overnight, following the appearance of files that were added – but later removed from – an update to Fallout 4 on Steam.

Said update included files that appear to be for a previously-announced Fallout 4 next-gen update coming to the game on consoles and PC at some point this year. However, the files in question included an unexpected prefix, as they included the term ‘newvegas2’.

The new branch was picked up by database website SteamDB, noting the addition of the branches on April 4, 2023. Obviously, this led to a lot of questions – not least because New Vegas was actually based on the engine for Fallout 3 and came out before Fallout 4, so technically there’d be very little reason for those terms to apply to this game.

However, Bethesda didn’t provide any answers, and in fact only raised more questions when they quietly removed the files just a couple of days later, with no explanation as to why or indeed what these files may have actually been referencing.

Many fans speculated on places like the Gaming Leaks and Rumours subreddit that the files may be related to the Creation Club DLC – which was a collection of items for Fallout 4 released with one of its early patches that included a small amount of Fallout 3 content. Of course, a very optimistic hope of some fans were for a New Vegas 2, but evidence suggests this is unlikely.

It wouldn’t be the first time rumours of a potential Fallout New Vegas 2 have done the rounds – last year, journalist Jeff Grubb claimed Fallout New Vegas 2 was in “very early talks” at Xbox following Microsoft’s purchase of Bethesda in 2020. However, developer Obsidian themselves have denied they’re working on a follow up a few times, most recently back in October in a tweet celebrating the series’ 25th anniversary.

Posting alongside a video celebrating the milestone, the studio gave a cheeky “And before anyone asks, our plates are pretty full right now, so no.” – presumably in reference to them returning to the series any time soon. In fact, they were busy with Pentiment, which launched about a month later to critical acclaim.
