Dead Island 2 may finally see daylight soon, according to comments made by publisher Deep Silver’s parent company Embracer Group.
As spotted by Video Games Chronicle, the subject of the zombie adventure came up during an earnings presentation. During a Q&A portion, the host directly referred to the game, which has been stuck in development limbo almost ten years. “It very clearly is [still alive], and I at least expect the release this financial year, or sorry next financial year I should say.”
The host continued by asking Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors a question. “So, is that reasonable and what can we expect from a title that has been in development for probably 10 years or so?” Mr Waingefors responded “I can’t talk about Dead Island 2 because it’s not announced as such from the publisher. But we have just talked about [that] we have one unannounced AAA title… that you think is Dead Island 2, so it’s hard for me to comment further on that.”
It’s somewhat vague, but does seem to indicate that some movement may be happening soon with the game. It also lines up with comments serial industry leaker Tom Henderson made on his YouTube channel last week. Henderson claimed that he’d been in contact with people close to the game’s development. “A release date is expected to be somewhere in Q4 2022, possibly leading up to next year if there are any problems with the development cycle,” he claimed.
We saw the first Dead Island 2 gameplay all the way back during Gamescom in 2014. The game’s gone between several studios during its protracted development. Despite this, various Embracer Group departments have maintained it’s still in production as recently as 2019. Maybe it’ll finally reach the end of its protracted journey soon.
