Searching for a Starfield planets guide? With confirmation by Todd Howard that there will be over 1000 world coming in Bethesda Studios’ new space-faring RPG, we can’t blame you for feeling a little overwhelmed. There’s a lot to explore in this game, so it’s important to know where to start.

In this Starfield planets guide, we’ll cover all the planets we know about so far. While the vast majority of worlds aren’t going to be important beyond grabbing some resources and studying some local wildlife, there are still plenty of big names to keep an eye on. We’ll give you an overview of all the major planets we know about so far, updating this guide as we near the Starfield release date. Then we’ll give you a list of other named planets and moons that we’ve seen so far.

All major planets in Starfield

Here are all the major planets in Starfield we know about so far:

Let’s break down what we know about each one so far, and why they’re quite so important.

Akila

Akila is the capital planet for the Starfield Freestar Collective faction. We don’t know much about the planet’s characteristics and biosphere yet, but the massive walls around the capital, Akila City, suggest some hostile local wildlife. The planet is located in the Cheyene system.

As the home of the second largest in-game faction, and a place where you’ll encounter a few potential Starfield companions, Akila is almost certainly going to be a frequent stop for many players.

Earth

The homeworld of humankind is known to feature in Starfield. Strangely though, we currently know nothing about it. The fact it hosts no faction capitals and hasn’t been mentioned all suggest some great catastrophe has taken place planetside. We do know that, according to developers, we’ll find out about the fate of our world “very early on in Starfield”, suggesting the planet is likely to have at least some significant role within the Starfield story or adjacent side missions for the Sol System.

Gagarin

We know little about Gagarin too, but it got a brief spotlight back in an early gameplay showcase. We know that the planet is in the “goldilocks zone” of the Alpha Centauri system, meaning it’s very likely to host an abundance of life. There’s been some speculation that it’ll be a safari world, covered in flora, fauna, and wildlife. Whether it will play a part in the campaign, and what that part might be, are as of yet unknown.

Jemison

Jemison is perhaps the most important world we so far know about in-game. With a temperate climate, and atmosphere and gravity similar to Earth, the world has become a defacto successor to humanity’s birthplace.

Most importantly though, Jemison is the cornerstone world of the Starfield United Colonies faction, hosting their prosperous capital of New Atlantis City. It’s also the home base for the Starfield Constellation faction, who you’ll join at the start of the story. We know you’ll be visiting it during the early campaign, and it’s likely to remain one of the most important places in the galaxy for players to visit.

Mars

Though Earth might be in a tight spot, we know that life on Mars is still going strong. The Red Planet also falls into United Colonies space, and hosts some of the largest mining and industrial projects within civilised space. It’s likely the current jewel of our own solar system. Of particular note is its capital, Cydonia City, the oldest human extraterrestrial settlement in the galaxy. This city’s massive industrial capacity makes it vitally important to both its faction and the wider area of civilised space as a whole. Players in need of a lot of resources will probably end up here sooner or later.

All Starfield planets

There are plenty more planets out there, and we’ve been lucky enough to spot a few of them during various trailers and showcases for Starfield. Some of these worlds will have plenty more to do on them than what we’ve seen, while others might have never seen life on their surfaces before your arrival. There’s probably even a few that will end up moving into the major planets category, especially if some of them turn out to be home to major Starfield cities. We know that some will fall under the jurisdiction of different Starfield factions. Others, meanwhile, will be far beyond the Settled Systems, making them perfect goals to aim towards on your exploration of the stars.

How does exploring planets work in Starfield?

Planetary exploration in Starfield will vary somewhat in approach from world to world. The basics though is that when entering one of the Starfield systems, you’ll be able to focus in on system bodies, entering planet view. This will provide you with information about the planet such as its composition, gravity, temperature, atmosphere, and whether it has water, plants, and animals. This will let you quickly determine if a planet has what you’re looking for and is worth visiting. After all, there’s no point heading to a gas giant if you’re looking to set up an outpost.

We don’t know if there will be a scanning mechanic involved from here, but either way, you’ll be able to locate points of interest across the planet, asteroid, base, or moon’s surface. You can then interact with these points of interest to travel to them. We don’t yet know if you’ll be able to manually traverse a planet’s surface from one POI to another, but it seems unlikely.

Planets within the Settled Systems will be the most populated and abundant. Worlds like Akila and Jemison that we’ve seen in the gameplay trailer footage will likely have more POIs, and more missions tied to them. Meanwhile the most distant worlds which make up the majority of the 1000+ planets will be more empty. Many will still have POIs on them though, created with procedural generation, which will splice together different handcrafted assets and repeatable quests so that there’s something available to do. They’ll also vary in fauna, resources and terrain, a forest-covered mountainous planet to a barren icy moon.

Some of the planets and star systems are based on real-life locations in space. The most obvious example of this is the Alpha Centauri system, based on the real-life star, and the first star visited by humans in the Starfield universe. Interestingly, all of the planets and moons in this system are named after astronauts with Gagarin (Yuri Gagarin), Jemison (Mae Jemison), Olivas (John Daniel Olivas), and Chawla (Kalpana Chawla).

That’s everything so far for our Starfield planets guide. There are of course far more planets out there, and some on this list we’re yet to learn more about that’ll boost their importance in the rankings. We still don’t know which planet you’ll find the Starfield Xenofresh Corporation faction’s pleasure city of Neon on, for example.
