Who are the Freestar Collective in Starfield?

The Freestar Collective are the second largest major power in Starfield’s Settled Systems. We don’t know exactly when the Collective was founded, but we know that their capital was founded around 2167, with the game’s story taking place around 2330.

The Freestar Collective is a loose confederation of different star systems – the Cheyenne, Narion, and Volii systems – primarily dedicated to protecting the personal freedom of its citizens. They see themselves as something of a peacekeeping force in the region, and they strive for stability and place emphasis on a defensive military doctrine.

While we don’t know how far their influence extends, we know that their core territory consists of three star systems. This includes Akila City, located on the planet of the same name in the Cheyenne system, and the capital of the Freestar Collective. This city also includes the Freestar Collective’s greatest stronghold, known simply as The Rock.

The Freestar Collective are also the main rivals of the Starfield United Colonies faction, having been at war with them just twenty years prior to the game’s events. The Narion War and the Colony War were messy affairs, and though peace has held since its end, tensions still remain. It’s likely that in-game, showing favour to one faction will strain your relations with the other, similar to the rivalry system between the New California Republic and Caesar’s Legion back in Fallout New Vegas.

Can I join the Freestar Collective in Starfield?

You will be able to join the faction in Starfield if you want to. While we don’t yet know how specifically to do this, it’s likely that you’ll need to head to The Rock, and speak to the right people there to become a part of the faction. You’ll almost certainly be able to join their rivals, the United Colonies, as well. Given the relationship between the two however, it seems unlikely that you’ll be able to join both, and you may have to choose between them.
