Game director Todd Howard stated that Bethesda is picking gritty realism over unexplainable magic. And with an early section of the game’s main story sending you here, we’re sure to find out an explanation for why Mars isn’t home to a thriving population.

However, despite the desolate appearance of Cydonia in comparison to some other major cities, Cydonia is home to its own inhabitants. As the first planet colonised by humans, the technology used was more rudimentary than it would become. Coupled with the need to avoid the harsh Martian climate, the city was built largely underground, which is where you’ll find most of the city’s people.

Considering that Cydonia is a mining facility, expect plenty of accidents and issues that need solving. And the tough NPCs will probably treat you with hostility if not discomfort. The tension between the resident miners and the United Colonies is also a potential angle worth exploring.

Despite its clear usefulness as a mining facility, and the potential riches that Cydonia generates, it is a very obviously poor city, especially when contrasted with the opulence of cities like New Atlantis. With multiple factions in the game, this could be caused by anything from diplomatic tensions to raids from factions such as the Crimson Fleet. Whatever it is, we’re excited to check it out and find out more.

Given its use as a mining facility, Cydonia could also be a prime location to scavenge some rare materials for use in crafting and research. Perhaps as part of the quests found here, players will be able to make the most of the city’s mining operations to find themselves rare metals among other things.
