Curious about Starfield companions? Like all of Bethesda’s previous RPGs, Starfield is set to have a host of different NPC characters who will follow the player on request, aiding in fights, puzzles, exploration and getting stuck in doorways. A companion can add a lot to the single player experience.

Here then are all Starfield companions that we know about so far, and their unique traits and abilities. Just like previous Bethesda games, with one of these allies at your side, you’ll be far better equipped to explore Starfield planets and star systems across the galaxy, from the prosperous New Atlantis City on Jemison to the wild safari of Gagarin.

Starfield companions: Sarah Morgan, Barrett, and Sam Coe standing around in a room of a starship.

All companions in Starfield

There are six companions you’ll be able to choose from that we know of so far. In all likelihood, this list will grow as we learn more about the game closer to the Starfield release date. For now, the six available companions are:

  • Adoring Fan
  • Barrett
  • Sam Coe
  • Sarah Morgan
  • Vasco

Each of these companions will have different skills too, which will make them better suited to different roles. Some also possess unique abilities. Let’s go over each of them one-by-one.

Adoring Fan

Yes, he’s back. In a direct reference to the character of the same name from Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, the Adoring Fan is a special kind of companion, who will make constant appearances nearby to the player if you have the Starfield trait ‘Hero Worshipped’ equipped. He’ll follow you around, jabbering on and giving constant praise. We also know that he’ll offer gifts to the player, and will likely still respond to some basic commands if you talk to him. We don’t know if he possess any special skills or abilities.

Starfield companions: The adoring fan stares not-adoringly at the player character.

If he becomes too much of an annoyance, Bethesda developers showed off a method to permanently get rid of him during the Starfield showcase. This method involved a high-impact double barrel shotgun – we’ll let you fill in the rest.

Adoring Fan’s skills

These are the skills the Adoring Fan has:

  • Weightlifting – Rank 2
  • Concealment – Rank 1
  • Scavenging – Rank 1

The Adoring Fan has an interesting set of skills. Weightlifting will give him a greater carrying capacity, while concealment and scavenging seem to make him adept at sneaking around and finding rare or useful items. He seems like a perfect choice to station at an outpost to help gather materials for upgrades and research.

Adoring Fan’s location

We don’t know the exact location of the Adoring Fan, but it seems that you will need to choose a specific Starfield trait to come across him. By choosing the Hero Worshipped trait, you’ll occasionally have an Adoring Fan come up to you to provide you with gifts, and potentially, the chance to recruit them.

Barret

Barret is one of the first people you’ll meet in Starfield. He’s an adventurer and scientist, and a well rounded companion. He’s also a member of Constellation, with a mind for engineering and mechanics.

All Starfield companions: Barret, with his skills and their levels displayed.

Barret’s skills

These are the skills Barret has:

  • Gastronomy – Rank 1
  • Robotics – Rank 2
  • Particle Beam Weapon Systems – Rank 3
  • Starship Engineering – Rank 4

These skills mean that Barret has the ability to craft high-quality meals which will provide greater benefits when consumed. He also boosts your damage against robots, and improves your ship’s weapons and designs. With this versatility, Barret is a reliable follower to have close at hand if you like to dive head-first into situations when you’re out exploring the galaxy.

Barret’s location

Barret is probably the easiest companion to find, as you’ll meet him during Starfield’s opening mission.

Heller

We don’t know too much about Heller so far, with the only glimpse of him in the Starfield Direct being of him seemingly stranded on an alien planet saying he’s got to get off it.

Starfield companions: Heller in a spacesuit on a rocky planet.
A man in a spacesuit with a helmet exploring the starfield.

Heller’s skills

  • These are the skills Heller has:
    Outpost Engineering – Rank 3
  • Geology – Rank 1

These skills suggest that Heller would be the perfect companion to help you set up an outpost once you find a planet to settle on. His outpost engineering skills will help you get started and build what you need, while geology will help out when it comes to finding rare ores required for building and research.

Heller’s location

We don’t know where to find Heller, but based on the Starfield Direct, we assume he’ll be found stranded on a planet somewhere awaiting rescue.

Marika Boros

We also don’t really know much about Marika Boros besides where she can be found. However, some of her skills make her a handy companion to have around, especially in combat situations.

Starfield companions: Marika Boros sitting at a bar.

Marika Boros’ skills

These are the skills Marika Boros has:

  • Ballistics – Rank 2
  • Shotgun Certification – Rank 1
  • Particle Beam Weapon Systems – Rank 1

Marika’s skills are clearly tailored to combat, and more specifically, gun combat. If you’re planning on heading into dangerous areas, or are taking on some Crimson Fleet members, she will be the companion you’ll want to have your back.

Marika Boros’ location

Marika can seemingly be recruited from a spaceport called The Viewport, however, at the moment we don’t know exactly where to find this specific spaceport.

Sam Coe

Described by Lead Companions Designer Alan Nanes as an “ex-space cowboy”, Sam Coe likely originated from the territory of the Starfield Freestar Collective faction, though now works with Constellation. He’s a measured and stoic individual, but has also been confirmed as one of the Starfield romance options in-game, should you want to explore that path.

Starfield companions: Sam Coe with his skill menu open.

Sam Coe’s skills

These are the Skills Sam Coe is working with:

  • Geology – Rank 1
  • Payloads – Rank 2
  • Rifle Certification – Rank 3
  • Piloting – Rank 4

With these skills, Sam has spectacular ability as a pilot, making him a great addition to your Starfield crew. He’s also well-suited for long-range combat. If taking a measured approach to your combat and exploration is more your style, the ex-space cowboy might be the pick for you.

Sam Coe location

While not definitively confirmed, it looks like players will be able to find Sam Coe at Akila City. He may show up elsewhere though, given his current allegiances.

Sarah Morgan

Sarah Morgan is the leader of the Starfield Constellation faction, a group of intrepid space explorers who are key to Starfield’s main campaign. She’s been described as confident and headstrong, and though we don’t know if she’ll be a permanent companion, we do know she’ll at least be a temporary one during part of the main Starfield story.

All Starfield companions: Sarah Morgan, with her skills and their levels displayed.

Sarah Morgan’s skills

Here are the skills that make Sarah Morgan stand out:

  • Botany – Rank 1
  • Leadership – Rank 2
  • Lasers – Rank 3
  • Astrodynamics – Rank 4

Being an ex-soldier and current leader of a faction, it’s little surprise that Sarah is good with laser weapons, and competent with leadership. Her scientific acumen also make her abilities well suited to deep scientific research, and she’ll be a good choice of companion for anyone who likes to be meticulous with their exploration and scientific discovery.

Sarah Morgan location

You’ll be able to find Sarah at the Constellation headquarters in New Atlantis, a capital city they share with the Starfield United Colonies faction.

Vasco

Vasco is a bipedal robot owned by Constellation, and technically, the only officially confirmed companion as of right now. He’s featured heavily in a lot of the gameplay marketing material.

Starfield companions: Vasco in a firefight onboard a ship or space station.

We don’t know Vasco’s specific skills and abilities yet, but we do know that he’s primarily built with utility in mind, though also wields integrated armaments which allow him to perform in combat. His large frame suggest he’ll likely be able to act as a bulwark in firefights, and support a lot of useful exploration equipment during scientific excursions.

Starfield crew members

Companions are your go-to adventure buddies, but they’re not the only NPCs you’ll be able to bring along for the ride. While it looks like you’ll only be able to have one companion at a time, you can also hire NPCs as crew members to help you out. They’ll be able to man your starship weapons, systems, and stations, allowing access to larger ships. They’ll also be able to man your Starfield outposts, helping you to research new tools and equipment, and earn heaps of credits.

All the companions we know about so far can be hired as crew members. It’s important to note though that not all crew members can be companions. Ballistics experts like Heller is one example, but we know there will be dozens more at a minimum. If you want a full breakdown of how crew members differ, where to find them, and all the ones we know about so far, we’ve got you covered in another guide.

That’s everything we’ve got so far on all Starfield companions that we know are available in-game. It’s quite likely we’ll get more companions than just these six, and there’s a likelihood that we’ll have at least one follower available from each major faction. Take a look at our Starfield factions list if you need an overview of what to expect.

How many companions are there in Starfield?

We currently know of 6 confirmed companions in Starfield.

Can I romance companions in Starfield?

Sam Coe is the only Starfield companion currently confirmed to be romanceable, but you may be able to romance others too.
