Several Starfield cities have been talked about by Bethesda across multiple events, teasers, and trailers. Each of them is brimming with culture, people, and stories that are yet to unfold. Four main cities have been revealed so far.
While Starfield has 1000+ planets, the space-exploration RPG will stick to fleshing out only a few of them with rich content. The game seems to have settlements of all shapes and sizes, with the four detailed below being particularly significant in-game. They’re occupied by a range of factions, from the enterprising Ryujin Industries to the Freestar Collective.
Starfield cities and locations
Bethesda and Xbox’s showcases have unveiled four major Starfield cities so far – New Atlantis, Cydonia, Akila City, and Neon City. The Key and Red Mile appear to be notable cities too. There are other locations that players can explore to discover new side quests and potential weapon upgrades. Each city has been designed from the ground up to please both Skyrim/Fallout fans as well as newcomers. Let’s take a look at these sprawling cities, rich with people and information.
New Atlantis
Game director Todd Howard proudly describes New Atlantis as “the biggest city we’ve ever built. It’s kind of the capital of the game.” We got to explore the city during the Starfield Direct showcase, with devs calling it a “true melting pot with citizens from every race, creed, and ethnicity.”
Located on the planet Jemison, New Atlantis will certainly play a major role in the story of Starfield as the home turf of the United Colonies and the biggest of the Starfield cities. This massive, tech park-like city also houses the headquarters of Constellation, a team of space explorers devoted to exploring the stars.
Cydonia
Largely underground on Mars, Starfield’s Cydonia is an abandoned mining settlement. Lead quest designer, Will Shen, calls it part of the ‘old neighbourhood.’ With Bethesda deliberately picking realism over a magical approach for Starfield’s tech, Cydonia will offer players a glimpse of a past that is yet to be fully understood.
Players might run into plenty of accidents and issues that need solving. There also may be dangers lurking about, dangers and creatures that turned Cydonia into what it is. And with the Earth out of commission in the game, heading to a nearby planet for resources makes for an interesting angle. We’ll get to learn more about this city as we move closer to the Starfield release date on Xbox Series S|X and PC.
Akila City
Next up in the known Starfield cities, we have Akila CIty. Described as a city for individuals of freedom, Akila City is the home of the Freestar Collective. This loose confederation spans three distinct star systems. These people witnessed grievous losses during the great Colony War of 2310 against the United Colonies. They value the sanctity of personal freedom and protect it with their lives.
The city has a variety of people who seem to possess murky pasts and potential redemption arcs. You might spot people from multiple Starfield factions. Strong Tatooine vibes from Star Wars give hope for a strong Fallout influence in the area. Be wary of the Ashta predators that lie in wait outside Akila City’s walls. This creature is supposedly a mix between a wolf and a velociraptor.
Neon City
Filled with vices and unique pleasures, Starfield’s Neon City is one of the game’s major tourist traps. Its claim to fame is Aurora, a drug derived from a fish that has psychotropic properties and one that’s banned everywhere else. Neon City offers pleasures for the mind, soul, and body in Starfield. It started as a fishing platform before doubling down on its tourist appeal.
Expect all sorts of sleazy and manipulative folk in Starfield’s version of New Vegas. Situated in the VOL II system, the aquatic world of Neon City was described as a ‘pleasure city’ by design director Emil Pagliarulo in a teaser video.
The Key
This city appears to be an orbital space station. Old United Colony posters can be spotted here. Considering that this city has a sizable Crimson Fleet presence, it can be assumed that The Key was captured by them. While we don’t know how much of it we can explore, expect it to play a role in Starfield.
Red Mile
Situated on the planet Porrima 3 in the Porrima star system, Red Mile is another important city in Starfield. It might be an arena or challenge of sorts as there are hints that suggest so. A logo features a running man, with inhabitants watching screens in front of a door covered in the word “Run.” Expect to learn more about Red Mile as Starfield gets closer to launch.
And that covers the four major cities of Starfield. We might get more information about other Starfield cities so stay tuned for the latest information. Recent gameplay footage has us hopeful for a fulfilling journey across the cosmos. Expect more information about the infamous Starfield Crimson Fleet faction and the Xenofresh Corporation. The game drops later this year and we can’t wait to discover its many secrets.
