Looking to respec in Baldur’s Gate 3? Changing your character’s proficiencies is nothing new, and it’s a common enough desire in RPGs. Larian Studios’ latest entry into the Dungeons and Dragons inspired trilogy is no exception.

If you’re hoping to respec in Baldur’s Gate 3 or looking to find Withers to do so, we’ll go over everything you need to know here. Respecing is sort of like hitting a reset for your character. It can be a great way to try out different abilities or classes in the game, and build up better synergies with the capabilities of your companions.

How to respec and change class in Baldur’s Gate 3

In order to respec and change your chosen class in Baldur’s Gate 3, you need to meet Withers, the undead skeletal figure who resides in the Dank Crypt. To respec, you need to select your chosen character and interact with Withers to talk to them. Keep in mind that you can respec your main character, or any of your party member companions as you choose.

Note also that to use the respec function, you need to have 100 gold to hand to give to Withers in exchange for using the function.

Where to find Withers in Baldur’s Gate 3

Withers can be found residing in the Dank Crypt. It’s not too difficult a place to find. Once your character wakes up on the beach, head to the Overgrown Ruins waypoint. You’ll find a large set of double doors that lead into the Crypt. You’ll need to lockpick them to open the way. Alternatively you can take the secondary entrance at the top of the cliffs, though you’ll need to be wary of the bandits up there.

Make your way through the dungeon, being wary of the various traps and enemies within. When you come to the room with two sets of massive oak double doors, pick the one on the right. Fight off the enemies inside when you attempt to open the secret chamber at the back of the room. Then just interact with the Ornate Sarcophagus, inside that chamber. Doing this will make Withers appear. After a brief dialogue exchange, he’ll head to your camp, where you can then find him permanently.

Tips for respecing in Baldur’s Gate 3

As we mentioned before, you’re not limited to just your main character for respecs. You can also respec any of your companions. This means that if you want to make Gale a Fighter instead of a Wizard, or turn Karlach into a Sorcerer rather than a Barbarian, you can do so.

Respecing can be a helpful way to keep your party as versatile as possible. With a full party of different classes, you open the door to a lot more utility in and out of combat. Equally, it allows you to test out new strategies using different abilities, which can be helpful for figuring out what you should focus a given respec on to optimise your approach into something that works for you. If you’re feeling particularly bold, you can even try out multiclassing.

That covers everything on how to respec in Baldur’s Gate 3, as well as how to find Withers. There’s plenty more in this D&D RPG though, even in the early game. Did you figure out how to free Shadowheart on your playthrough, or are you looking for the scuffed boulder and the treasure underneath it? We’ve got answers to both those questions and more for you in additional BG3 guides.
