Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is finally here and players can’t wait to form their ultimate teams with their favorite Pokemon. Pokemon caters to all types of players, from those wanting to play casually to those who optimize their teams to be the best in terms of moves, types and stats. For the latter type of trainers, you might hear them mention IVs every now and again.

What Are IVs?

Individual Values (IVs) are values that are unique to every single Pokemon. While Pokemon of the same species may have similar Base Stats, IVs are small differences that ultimately lead to an increase in these stats. Each of a Pokemon’s stats (HP, Attack, Special Attack, Defense, Special Defense and Speed) will have a corresponding IV to them.

In special cases, a Pokemon’s IV also affects a Pokemon’s moves. A prime example of which is the move Hidden Power. It will change its power and typing based on the Pokemon’s IVs.

For example, you may have two Pikachus in your team, but one will most likely have better IVs and have slightly better stats because of that. A Pikachu at level 100 with full IVs in HP will have a total HP of 211 while a Pikachu with 0 IVs in HP will have a total HP of 180. Those who want to maximize their teams potential might even look for Pokemon with perfect IVs for every stat, no matter how incredibly small the chances for that are.

Judge Function

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet implemented something called the Judge Function, a handy tool for determining your Pokemon’s IV in the game. However, it can only be accessed after defeating the Paldean Elite Four and defeating the Pokemon Champion.

Once all of that is over, you can head to any nearby Pokemon Center. The staff will notice your Hall of Fame sticker and allow you to access the Judge Function.

Go to the Pokemon in your team, highlight the one you want to check out and double tap the “+” button.

That Pokemon’s stats should be represented by a chart on the upper right side of your screen, along with words that give an approximation for their IVs. The maximum value of an IV for each stat is 31, totaling to 186 for all six stats.

The words on the graph give a vague description about the IVs, but this is their general meaning:

  • Best – 31 IVs
  • Fantastic – 30
  • Very Good – 26-29
  • Pretty Good – 16-25
  • Decent – 1-15
  • No Good – 0

Accompanying the graph will be a general rating on the lower right portion of the screen.

They mean:

  • Amazing stats! – 151~186
  • Great stats! – 121~150
  • Good stats – 91~120
  • OK stats – 0~90

While it may be easy to get caught up in all of this talk for the perfect IVs, trainers should remember that the likelihood to obtain a Pokemon with really high IVs is extremely unlikely and that the bonuses they bring are incremental at best.

Trainers should always prioritize the fun of their game and choose their favorite Pokemon without any influence of factors such as stats or IVs.
