Last season, San Francisco 49ers edge rusher and the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year, Nick Bosa, stole the show with a league high 18.5 sacks and proved to everyone how dangerous of a threat he is to opposing offensive linemen.
On the other hand, Cleveland Browns edge rusher Myles Garrett also illustrated how consistently imposing he can be, finishing with 16 sacks for the second straight season in 2022.
Here’s a look at five of the Top 20 Best Edge Rushers in Madden 24 along with some analysis on why they deserve to be on the list this year:
Nick Bosa – 98 overall
Does he really need much of an introduction? The man went above and beyond expectations last season en route to winning the Defensive Player of the Year Award with a league high 18.5 sacks. In a previous prediction guide, we actually thought Bosa played so well that he could very well land in the 99 Club this season. What led him to fall just short is a bit of a marvel for us, particularly seeing how well the 49ers defense played into the playoffs as well. Bosa, though tied with Garrett, definitely deserves to be the best edge rusher in the game this year, without question.
Micah Parsons – 97 overall
If there’s anyone that is more imposing with sheer athleticism and physical strength off the edge in the NFL, it’s none other than the star third-year sensation Micah Parsons. In just two seasons of playing in the league, Parsons made the Pro Bowl twice, was selected First Team All-Pro in both seasons as well, and won the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award following his spectacular 2021 regular season. Well, lo and behold, Parsons returned once more with a dominant 2022 campaign, finishing with 13+ sacks for the second consecutive season. Parsons deserves to be a 97 overall, and could very well finish with a higher edge rusher rating come the end of the regular season.
T.J. Watt – 94 overall
Last season, T.J. Watt didn’t see a lot of playing time due to a pectoral injury, only appearing in 10 games. That said, Watt is still as good as they come, and in 2021, really solidified his place as one of the best in the NFL. That season alone, Watt tied Michael Strahan’s single season record with 22.5 sacks despite the fact that he only played in 15 games. At only 28-years-old, Watt is still very much in his prime, and you can expect him to bounce back in a big way in 2023. Though it might seem a bit low for some, Watt’s 94 overall rating to start is a fair one.
Haason Reddick – 90 overall
Talk about a breakout season, the Eagles Haason Reddick showcased what kind of spectacle he can be off the edge. In his first season with the Eagles, Reddick’s transition couldn’t have gone any better, finishing with 16.0 sacks (Tied 2nd with Garrett), five forced fumbles (Tied 1st with Alex Highsmith), and 49 combined tackles. The man was virtually unstoppable at times, and if anything, should have received a 93 overall rating. At age 28, Reddick is in his prime and could have another big season in 2023. Though he has a much lower rating than we expected at launch, Reddick’s 90 overall was well-earned.
Matthew Judon – 89 overall
Along with Reddick, Matthew Judon had a very impressive breakout season and played a pivotal role for the Patriots defensive success. In his second season with the Patriots, Judon came away with 15.5 sacks (a career high), three passes defended, and two forced fumbles. The Patriots defense is pretty stacked with elite talent, and at the top of the list is Judon himself. Following two straight seasons of posting double-digit sack numbers, it does come to a bit of a surprise that Judon didn’t make the 90 Club this year. But as the 2023 season gets underway, we expect that to change.
