What are Hirelings in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)?

Hirelings are a hireable type of NPC that you can recruit to fight for you in exchange for a small amount of gold. They don’t have personalities or personal quests, and you’re not going to be able to romance them (though it’s not like you’re short for choice in that department).

Essentially, a Hireling is an extra pair of hands to help out in combat. You can upgrade them however you like, so they’re great for testing out new classes and subclasses without needing to commit one of your main Baldur’s Gate 3 companions to the role. They’re not going to match up to Gale, Karlach, Astarion, Lae’zel or Shadowheart, but they can still hold their own in a fight nonetheless.

How to recruit Hirelings in Baldur’s Gate 3

To recruit a Hireling, you’ll first need to find Withers in Baldur’s Gate 3. Find him in the Baldur’s Gate 3 Dank Crypt and add him to your camp. Withers is the one that you’ll be able to recruit Hirelings from. Like usual, Wither’s actions are cryptic. It seems that some of the souls on offer as recruits were previously bandits of an Absolute warband, while others may have been victims. Whatever happened, they’re now effectively his property, and he’ll sell them to you for your use in combat. They’ll cost 100 gold each, but will take up a slot in your party.

There are a few other things to keep in mind when recruiting a Hireling:

• It costs 100 gold for each Hireling
• You need an open space in your party when you talk to Withers in order to recruit a Hireling.
• You can Hire up to three Hirelings at once.
• You can order Hirelings to wait at camp, or dismiss them entirely. You can still recruit the same Hirelings back again, but you’ll have to pay the recruitment fee once more.
• Hirelings will be recruited at Level One but can level up immediately. They will always gain the same amount of XP as your main character.
• Hirelings can use Wither’s services to change class, just like other party members.
• You cannot change a Hireling’s appearance, background, or race.
